Mac-talla nan Àitichean Falmhaichte | The Echoes of Uninhabited Places - Sheila Quillin

Seo am pìos as motha air a bheil mi ag obair an-ceartair; tha e doirbh dealbhan a thoghail dheth.

Anns a’ phìos seo tha mi a’ feuchainn ri greim fhaighinn air mac-talla nan àitichean falmhaichte. Ma thilgeas tu clach bheag a-steach do loch, chì thu na cuairtean a’ sgapadh air bàrr an uisge; ’s ann mar sin a tha cuimhne agus mac-talla Hiort dhomh. Bha mi cuideachd a’ smaoitinn air na slighean a tha fhathast ri fhaicinn air Hiort, agus air a’ chuimhne a dh’fhuiricheas nad fhèithean nuair a tha thu cho cleachdte ri rudeigin a dhèanamh.

Thàinig a’ chriomag gu h-ìosal thugam nuair a bha mi a’ smaointinn mun phìos seo, agus an dèidh dhomh pìos ealain le Brian McHenry.

This is the biggest piece I’m working on; it’s hard to photograph.

In this piece I’m trying to capture the echoes of uninhabited places. If you throw a stone into a loch you can see the ripples spreading on the surface of the water; the memories and echoes of St. Kilda are like that to me. I was also thinking of the paths that are still visible on St. Kilda and the muscle memory that stays with us when we’ve been so used to doing something.

The fragment below came to me when I was thinking about this piece, after seeing an artwork by Brian McHendry.
